Weight Loss Challenges After Pregnancy

By Trishia Serinton

Pregnancy will always cause women to gain weight, it's a natural part of the process. 'Baby weight' refers to the weight that has gained not only by the growing fetus and the enlarging womb but also the deposition of fat around the abdomen. Once the baby is delivered, the mother can have a tough time trying to lose the extra weight. For mothers who had some excess weight before they became pregnant, it can be harder for them to shed the baby weight as well.

In this article we shall take a brief look at some of the steps that can be adopted to lose weight after pregnancy.

1. Hydration is important`

Following your pregnancy, it is essential to keep hydrated and prevent dehydration. Constantly drinking fluids can help keep the stomach full and control the amount of unhealthy foods that may be consumed. Don't over-do it though, drink only what your body craves.

2. Avoid strict dieting

It seems counter-intuitive, but breast milk needs to be replenished from the food you eat, and when it is not sufficient, the nutrients to the baby may not be rich enough. Weight loss is thought to be more healthy when it is done in a steady and slower pace, instead of trying to drop a lot of weight in a short period of time. Consuming healthy foods such as plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables are excellent at keeping hunger at bay and making sure the weight comes off gradually.

3. Regular exercise is important

Exercise remains one of the best ways to lose weight. Cardiovascular training such as aerobics and even strength exercises can help burn calories while maintaining muscle mass and bone strength. Exercises can include a brisk walk, jogging, swimming and cross-training. Exercise also helps keep the mood elevated due to the endorphins that are released. Stress that is naturally a part of raising a newborn will be reduced because of this. Before anyone begins a new exercise program, it is important to seek the advice of a doctor, to ensure it is safe.

4. Breastfeeding should be continued

Essential fats and nutrients are provided to the baby from breastfeeding, these give the baby the right amount of nutrition and helps to enhance the immune system. There are conflicting opinions as to whether or not breastfeeding can actually help others lose weight. Either way, weight loss should have no bearing on your decision to continue breastfeeding a baby.

5. Rest is important

The body goes through plenty of changes during a pregnancy, and afterwards, taking care of a newborn can be stressful. Researchers have shown that losing weight from pregnancy is much easier if the mother is getting at least seven hours of sleep each night.
