Dermal Filler Procedures and Dentists

By Cleah Sphan

All over the planet, many cosmetic procedures making use of dermal fillers happen every day. There are strict rules that govern the use of these compounds, and regarding who is qualified to administer the treatments, and the level of training necessary to do so. These treatments were done strictly by plastic surgeons and dermatologists in the past, but the guidelines have been restructured as of late. For certain kinds of conditions, dentists in some states in America have been certified to administer dermal fillers on patients.

Here we will examine what is involved for dentists who are licensed to treat patients using dermal fillers.

Some brief information on dermal fillers.

A natural component in human skin is hyaluronic acid, and this is what dermal fillers are mainly comprised of. As we age, the amount of hyaluronic acid within the skin reduces significantly causing lines and wrinkles. Skin can look much more youthful and refreshed after wrinkles and lines are reduced using dermal fillers. The lips are another area where these fillers can be used, as lips can be enhanced this way.

Dentists and dermal fillers

The debate about dermal fillers being administered by dentists is ongoing at this time. The argument against them doing so discusses their insufficient knowledge of the facial anatomy given that their training is primarily concerning the oral cavity. If you were to ask a dentist you would get a different answer, as during their training an intensive knowledge in the musculature of the face is needed as they relate to dentistry procedures.

Dentists in California have now been approved by their dental board for prescribing and administering dermal fillers. The recent changes are being praised by dentists, because according to them, they can deliver these treatments with the necessary training they have. The board does have some limitations about which conditions a dentist can administer this treatment for, and therapeutic reasons is the exception where permission is granted. The dentist must also take the necessary training in order to administer the treatments.

The guidelines vary between states. For example, the Georgia Dental Association allows dentists to inject dermal fillers for dental purposes only after they have undergone a 21 hour training program.

Limitations involved

After performing an extensive review of the dental boards in most other states in the United States, it appears that many states now allow dentists to perform dermal filler procedures as long as it is related to or required for a dental therapeutic purpose. Issues that are not directly related to dentistry, or for other cosmetic purposes may not be treated using dermal filler injections by dentists, laws could be broken if this is ignored. It is essential that every dentist check with the local state board to see if they would be allowed to inject dermal fillers should do receive the right training.

Summary

As time goes on, the art if dentistry advances greatly, and cosmetic procedures do the same. Dentists are now allowed to inject dermal fillers for dental related procedures but appeared to be still limited with what they can do when it comes to cosmetic reasons. There is no doubt that in the future it may well be that dentists can perform dermal filler procedures for cosmetic purposes but for the time being it is advised that every dentist check with the local state board as to what they can and cannot do.
