The Benefits Of Herbal Health Drinks

By Nita McKinney

Herbal health drinks are all the rage at the moment. Some are fairly cheap to buy and others are much more expensive. Herbs help to promote good health and in the past have been used to treat certain ailments. Although the mention of herbs usually means leaves such as rose-hips, , it also covers things like dandelion flowers too.

Tea originally came from the Far East, brought to the rest of the world by the Chinese. At it's simplest it is freshly boiled water infused with herbal leaves. From this humble beginning has grown a massive industry that uses anything from peppermint to chamomile to make teas.

Tea-making has not really changed much over the years. It's a simple process of adding water to a teabag or batch of herbs and letting it infuse the water, usually for about five minutes. These days there are infusion pots, in which loose leaves and bark can be placed. The pot filters the bark and leaves as you pour, meaning you get a clear drink free of any residue every time.

One of the reasons that the use of herbs has grown is because of the prevalence of growing herbs in the garden. Fresh herbs are great in a drink. Just remember that if using them in teas a simple formula is required. Use one teaspoon of dried herbs per cup and two teaspoons of fresh herbs per cup. Dried herbs have more pungency and therefore are used in smaller quantities. Add honey for a sweeter drink.

Herbal tonics are something that many people have started drinking. They are fairly easy to make, though it does take a while for them to become drinkable. They are made by placing fresh herbs, such as rosemary or nettles, in a jar and adding some red wine. After stirring with a wooden spoon you then seal the jar for around four weeks, to let the drink assume the flavor of the herbs. Try drinking a bit each day for maximum benefit.

If you do not want to make your own drink then be sure to pick one that has been thoroughly researched and contains quality ingredients. Ideally, it should have no additives, coloring or flavorings, just natural ingredients.

Peppermint tea is often used with stomach problems, such as bloating. These can be grown in the garden and once picked can be washed and used right away. Ginger is another product that has a good reputation. It's said to be great for motion sickness. Simmer a root of ginger for ten minutes, add a squeeze of fresh lemon and honey and you have something that can help fight colds.

One of the major benefits of herbal health drinks is their lack of caffeine. They can be taken if you have an upset stomach, and are great for soothing the body and mind. In a world where people eat a lot of processed food, it may be comforting to know that something as readily available and natural as herbs can help fight infections and sooth the body and mind.
