By Annabelle Holman

Gymnastics is simply a sport people engage in for different reasons. Military operations and competitions are some of the reasons why people take part in the sport. Other reasons why people participate is to pass leisure time and to attain body fitness and maintain psychological, physical, and mental health. The level of development of gymnastics in Delaware is very high because gymnasts receive training from professional coaches. This ranks them at the top worldwide.

The Greek language is the origin of the word gymnastics. The word means to practice naked in English. All exercises practiced in gymnasiums were referred to by this term in the old Greece. Male athletes practiced in gymnasiums without wearing clothes. Olympic competitions included all exercises practiced in gymnasiums. Those exercises are today separated into different fields.

As a competitive sport, coordination, agility, physical strength, flexibility, body balance, and power are the aspects tested. Gymnastics is governed by an international body. The body has affiliations with all local bodies that govern the sport in various countries worldwide. The commonest and most popular category of the sport is artistic gymnastics.

The sport has different levels of training with each requiring different levels of expertise. In the US, the lowest sanctioned competitive level is level 5. The other lower levels are considered non-competitive and participants do not compete at such levels except level 4. Some gyms require their students to pass this level before proceeding to the competitive level and hence may hold competitions among members and teams in the same level. Level 4 is meant to train kids, familiarize, and make them used to being in competitions.

Both feminine and masculine events are included in artistic events. Feminine events include balance beams, floor exercise, uneven bars, and vault. On the contrary, masculine events comprise of high bar, vault, still rings, parallel bar, floor exercises, and pommel horse. The events may require individual participants or a team to accomplish. Others require both individual and team effort. The events are improvements of exercises done in Ancient Greece.

Gymnastic is comprised of many disciplines in which participants may participate. Trampolining, tumbling, team gym, and aerobatic, rhythmic, and acrobatic gymnastics are among the major disciplines available. The sport allows participants from different age groups with some being as young as 2 years. Difficulty increases with individual ability and age. The routines are physically exhausting although they take a short period of time. Participants are tested for endurance, strength, awareness of limits, and flexibility.

Some of the disciplines named above such as rhythmic events are only meant for women hence men cannot engage in them at competitive levels. This sport generally gives a lot of freedom to participants. Individual performances are restricted to a few compulsory exercises but most of the moves made are self-selected. One can do any move they feel comfortable with during a performance.

Previously, scores awarded to athletes were limited to 10 points. However, with the introduction of a new scoring scheme, one can earn points without being limited by anything. Factors that influence points earned include difficulty, accuracy, and completeness of exercised performed.
