Are You Accidentally Sabotaging Your Diet Plan?

By Michael Olson

We all understand that the most effective foods for our weight loss plans are lean meats, whole grains and healthy fats. These foods fill us with protein and also energy. They keep our bodies nutritionally balanced with minimal calories while we work hard to reduce our fat at the gym. Did you already know though that some of the diet foods you've been eating may have been hindering your ability to lose weight? They could possibly be even adding calories to your body! Check out a few of the food items that might be assisting you to accidentally sabotage your diet.

Sports Drinks tend not to really help you. You have most likely been told that a sports drink is the proper way to replenish your body's electrolyte levels after a workout. Many doctors agree, though, that if your training is less than ninety minutes, water is a fine way to do this. Sports drinks are packed with sugar and calories and a massive amount of other things you don't need like artificial flavors and colors which defeat any attempts at eating only natural products. Try having some chocolate milk as a substitute. The sugars inside the chocolate will help your muscles start to recover and the calcium in milk keeps your bones strong.

Skip your protein shakes. Lots of people believe that protein shakes can be utilized rather than meals and to curb cravings between meals. When you are eating an normally healthy diet, however, a protein shake simply sends you into protein overdose. No matter what other people think, protein is not stashed in the muscles, it is stored in your body as fat. This implies that should you have taken in too much protein during the day your body stores what it doesn't need in your fat, which won't help you lose weight or inches at all.

Pre-packaged deli meat isn't really healthful at all. You might believe that a sandwich made from whole wheat bread and pre-packaged lean deli meat makes for a good lunch. Actually, pre-packaged deli meat has much too many preservatives and sodium (one helping contains about a third of the amount of sodium you should eat in a day). This will be particularly unsafe if you are at risk of contracting heart disease. Instead of selecting deli meat, select home grilled chicken or other poultry or fresh deli meat that you can get sliced at the deli counter. Sure these choices are more expensive but they are much healthier for you in the long run.

There are all sorts of things that we assume will help us lose weight: eating a whole wheat bagel in the morning, for example is actually a lot worse for you than a bowl of oatmeal with some cinnamon sprinkled into it for flavor. Ask your doctor precisely what the best ways for you to eat healthfully are and then follow those directions. If you pay attention and are careful about what sort of food you let yourself eat, losing weight isn't going to be a terribly big deal.
